01 | Golden Brown |
Some pop songs stand out in the crowd, Golden Brown by The Stranglers very much so. It would probably have been a number one single in the UK in the early 1980s, if only bass player Jean-Jaques Burnel hadn't told the media that Hugh Cornwall's lyrics actually is about heroin, not just a girl. So this is an old favourite of Flunk, with its baroque harpsichords feel. Flunk recorded this in bass player Ole Kristian Wetten's basement studio in Oslo during their annual Christmas party in 2021, late in the evening after considerable amount of festive drinks. The band are still surprised by how this recording turned out. |

01 | Cherry Came Too |
This Jesus and Mary Chain song has been on the "short list" for Flunk's Christmas party cover recording for many years, but never kind of made the cut until now. Recorded during a weekend in Calmeyer Studio in Oslo late summer 2022, the song is about a probably rather unhealthy relationship with someone called Cherry. It's very fun to sing! |

The Flunk tradition is to have an annual Christmas party, "julebord" in Norwegian, with a big dinner and plenty of drinks. A kind of blast in the dark, before the festive season, around the time of winter solstice. The previous collection, "Cover Ups - The Home Recordings", was released in 2016, a compilation of such Christmas party recordings. Including TV drama hit "Only You" (by Yazoo). This new collection has also been put together with some "julebord recordings", but most of the material was recorded during two days of acoustic recordings in Calmeyer Studio in Oslo in August 2022. In addition to some cover favourites, the band also recorded new takes on some old Flunk songs. One, "Two Icicles" from the "Personal Stereo" album, has almost never been performed live. The covers include Rod Stewart/Everything But The Girl broken heart classic "I Don't Want To Talk About It" and Simon & Gafunkel's "The Sound of Silence". Anja was singing the latter when she was a teen in an all girls band. Other recordings include covers by Jesus and Mary Chain, The Stranglers, Soft Cell and Radiohead. Three of the songs were recorded in bass player Ole Kristian Wetten's basement studio in Oslo, while two (Flunk songs "Your Koolest Smile" and "Under the Covers") were recorded in Anja's cabin deep in the woods outside Oslo during the first covid autumn, October 2020. |
