Rhythm Cast A Spell On Me (featuring Lydia Waits)

Press info

Delightfully eclectic sonic explorer Kohib makes a welcome return with the scintillating new single, 'Rhythm Cast A Spell On Me'.

DJ, producer and club organiser Øivind Sjøvoll has been actively producing exquisitely formed and far-reaching music for two decades, releasing cosmically-centred sounds on labels including Paper, Sprechen, and Lost Paradise. Ranging in glorious tone from the sweetest sunset soundtracks to throbbing meta-disco deviance, his expansive sound palette is both rich with vibrant luminosity and refreshingly difficult to predict. Following on from his hauntingly beautiful 'Armoured Boy' collaboration with Anneli Drecker, he's back in Beatservice action with a similarly seductive leftfield composition.

'Rhythm Cast A Spell On Me' sees Kohib welcome back singer Lydia Waits to provide a uniquely bewitching vocal performance. The profoundly atmospheric track meanders over a subtly effective rhythm track, with captivating instrumentation immaculately orchestrated to encompass delicate keys, dramatic bass notes, sprightly xylophone hits and otherworldly bass-clarinet refrains. The music blissfully caresses Waits' ethereal vocal, while hypnotic percussion elegantly embellishes the sublimely mesmeric groove.

The single release serves as a tantalising taster to a full album that's set to follow later in the year, and judging by this most spell-binding single, a supremely refined sonic delicacy awaits us.

Fake Fur (featuring Helle Larsen)

Press info

Talented meta-disco maverick Kohib is back in action for Beatservice Records with his latest reliably dazzling studio offering, 'Fake Fur'.

Øivind 'Kohib' Sjøvoll needs little in the way of introduction. The Beatservice mainstay routinely delivers ultra-refined sonics from across the board of eclectic wonderment, from sunset soundtracks to rousing disco deviance. The DJ, producer, and club organiser has released exceptional music on revered labels including Paper and Sprechen, featuring an expansive sound palette that is both rich with vibrant luminosity and refreshingly difficult to predict. Following his recent exquisite 'Rhythm Cast A Spell On Me' single – forged with vocalist Lydia Waits – Sjøvoll returns to collaborative action for the new single, this time pairing with his High Heeled Giants bandmate, Helle Larsen.

'Fake Fur' arrives with deliciously brooding intent, with Larsen's bewitching vocal gliding over immersive instrumentation and otherworldly textures. Evocative harmonics combine with ethereal synth leads and dramatic aural waves as hypnotic percussion gently drives the intoxicating groove. The vividly atmospheric music conjures the half-light of a crisp autumnal haze, warmed by the fire of the honeyed lead vocal, guiding the listener in from the chill of the night air.

This is the second single presented from Kohib's forthcoming long-player, and, once again, the immersive music leaves us ravenous in anticipation of the full release, while tantalisingly whetting our appetites in anticipation of what's to come.

Golden Skies (featuring Lydia Waits)

Press info

Masterful sonic architect Kohib returns to his regular home on Beatservice Records with the spellbinding new track, 'Golden Skies'.

DJ, producer and club organiser Øivind Sjøvoll has made a habit of crafting exquisitely formed soundscapes for two decades, releasing far-reaching sounds on labels including Paper, Sprechen, and Lost Paradise. His expansive repertoire takes in everything from immersive sundown soundtracks to floor-filling disco deviance, and his varied sound palette is both vibrantly luminous and refreshingly hard to predict. Following on from the heads-down groove of his 'Sidewalk Confessions' collaboration with Helle Larsen, his latest track ramps up the energy levels as he presents a gorgeously seductive and vocal-centred club cut.

'Golden Skies' once again sees Kohib join forces with talented vocalist, Lydia Waits, whose stirring performance shines like a beacon as it powers over Kohib's slick four to the floor groove. Crisp drums drive the hypnotic rhythm over a subaquatic bass line, as icy pads and pitched synth percussion combine to bewitching effect, effortlessly building to Waits' rousing and eminently engaging chorus section. This is emotive, immaculately produced and richly atmospheric work from Kohib, bridging the gap between cultured deep house and celestially charged nu-disco to create a track that's both utterly memorable and profoundly effective on the dance floor.

Golden Skies (featuring Lydia Waits) (Henrik Villard Remix)

Press info

Beatservice Records are thrilled to present a stunning Henrik Villard remix of Kohib's latest single, Golden Skies.

Kohib has been in dazzling form of late, with a string of well-formed and lovingly received releases arriving via his regular Beatservice home over the last year. Featuring the powerful vocals of Lydia Waits gliding over icy pads and subterranean bass, the hypnotic original version of 'Golden Skies' felt ripe for a remix, and here the label turn to rising star Henrik Villard to offer his unique interpretation.

Emerging talent Villard is forging a fine reputation for his tight house flavoured productions. From deep, heads-down grooves to stirring club house, the Oslo-based DJ and producer has released on labels including Mhost Likely, The Basement Discos, Liztomania Records, Closer To Truth, BCR, House Cookin' Records, among many others. Leaning into the bittersweet quality of Waits' yearning vocal, Villard's version adds dreamy chords, atmospheric pads and thick, club-ready bass, weaving the scintillating instrumentation over a slick four-to-the-floor drum groove to take the track deep into dancefloor territory.

The floor-focused remix breathes new life into an already bewitching track, ensuring 'Golden Skies' will remain on the horizon throughout 2022 and far beyond – while further cementing Villard's reputation as an artist to keep a close eye on.

Sidewalk Confessions (Third Attempt Dub)

Press info

Beatservice Records create musical alchemy with their latest release, bringing together two of the most beloved artists on their roster for the Third Attempt remixes of Kohib's magnificent 'Sidewalk Confessions'.

Both Kohib and Third Attempt have been in dazzling form of late, with each artist presenting a reliable stream of impactful releases via the Tromsø-based label in recent times. DJ, producer and club promoter Øivind 'Kohib' Sjøvoll's most recent effort came in the form of the scintillating 'Golden Skies', while fast-rising young producer Torje Fagertun Spilde – AKA Third Attempt – blew the roof off with his latest backroom bangers, 'Age Of Steam' and 'Nu Funk' from his latest album The Novel Sound. Here, Beatservice unite the two glowing talents, inviting Third Attempt to work his remix magic on last year's 'Sidewalk Confessions'.

True to form, Third Attempt's interpretations of the track are utterly enthralling. Fusing sophisticated funk with street smart swagger, he reframes Helle Larsen's sultry vocal over a honeyed backing track, retaining the ethereal atmospherics of the original while adding weight to the groove. Utilising key instrumentation from the original while embellishing the cut with delicate overdubs, he subtly transforms the track into a hypnotic, heads-down brooder. Also included on the EP is an equally compelling dub version, where Spilde dispenses with the vocal in favour of dexterous scratch cuts – further enhancing the implied hip hop sensibilities of his thoughtfully crafted rework.

This elegant remix EP represents cultured work from all involved, demonstrating an excellent piece of curation from the ever-imaginative Beatservice team.

Rhythm Cast A Spell On Me (featuring Lydia Waits) (Ost & Kjex Remix)

Press info

The talented Norwegian duo of Tore Gjedrem and Petter Haavik have accomplished much under their well-known Ost & Kjex moniker, releasing wildly original music while maintaining a refreshing sense of joy as they purvey their far-reaching sounds. With scores of releases under their belts on labels including Crosstown Rebels, Diynamic Music, and Snick Snack Records, and performances notched up at high profile venues including Fabric, Panorama Bar among many others, their output truly speaks for itself.

Applying their remix flex to fellow-Norwegian artist Kohib's haunting 2021 release 'Rhythm Cast A Spell On You', the pair work their distinct magic into the breathtaking original. Adding weight to the drums and a floor-focused gravity to the production, their version reframes Lydia Waits' hyper-atmospheric vocal over a tight but brooding club aesthetic. Bass arpeggios feverishly undulate as moody synth sweeps cascade over piercing snares and fizzing cymbals, building to a kinetically-charged crescendo for an unabated dance-floor eruption.

This is scintillating work from all concerned, with Ost & Kjex propelling Kohib's mesmerising music into the hearts and minds of an entirely new audience with their powerful revision – serving an unmissable release traversing disparate shades of Norway's vivid electronic music spectrum.

Sandcastles (featuring Helle Larsen)

Press info

Beatservice Records welcome back the irrepressible Kohib, who once again teams with Helle Larsen to brilliant effect on the poignant textures of 'Sandcastles'.

Prolific producer Øivind 'Kohib' Sjøvoll has been in sensational studio form of late, serving a flurry of deeply affecting productions via the ever-reliable Beatservice fold. Here, he resumes his fertile creative partnership with his High Heeled Giants bandmate Larsen, with the pair continuing their mesmerising studio simpatico to startling effect. Press info

Beatservice Records are beyond thrilled to announce the arrival of Kohib's hotly anticipated studio album 'Today's Tales Of Tomorrow'.

DJ, producer and club organiser Øivind 'Kohib' Sjøvoll has been in truly dazzling form of late, serving a series of mesmerising singles that served as a tantalising taster to his latest album – the third he's crafted for Beatservice. Actively producing immaculately crafted sounds for over two decades, sonic alchemist Kohib continues his deft aptitude for sculpting genre-defying compositions, with 'Today's Tales Of Tomorrow' playing host to some of his most compelling material to date. From pitch black introspection to rousing dancefloor abandon, the album is every bit as far-reaching as we've come to expect from this singularly talented artist.

The collection bursts into life via the club-focused thrust of 'Golden Skies', featuring the seductive vocals of enigmatic songstress, Lydia Waits, whose stirring performance shines like a beacon as it soars over Kohib's slick four/four groove. Crisp drums drive the hypnotic rhythm over a subaquatic bass line, as icy pads and pitched synth percussion combine to stunning effect, effortlessly building to Waits' rousing chorus section. Subtly shifting the mood, we arrive in the heads-down throb of 'It's Never Late In Neon Signs', where glistening arpeggios and snarling bass caress Lydia Waits' honeyed vocal, the pristine instrumentation undulating over a mesmerising, radio-friendly arrangement.

'Fake Fur' arrives with deliciously brooding intent, with (Kohib's High Heeled Giants bandmate) Helle Larsen's bewitching vocal gliding over immersive instrumentation and otherworldly textures. Evocative harmonics combine with ethereal synth leads and dramatic aural waves, the hypnotic percussion gently driving the groove deep into the half-light of a crisp autumnal haze. Next, 'Hold That Thought' mischievously switches the rhythm, as thick sub bass and searing synth motifs power over broken drums while Helle Larsen's affecting vocal rises from delicate verse into dramatic chorus bursts.

'Sandcastles' once again sees Helle Larsen grace the stage, lacing waves of cinematic pads glide and live bass as scattered percussion forms an alluring rhythm. Sparse and precise, the evolving music ebbs and flows as the tides, gorgeously caressing Larsen's emotion-rich vocal as she weaves her seductive lyrical metaphors. The album's title track 'Today's Tales Of Tomorrow' sees sinister lead synths exploding over deviant bass as the pulsating rhythm drives the cut through distant vocals, the low-slung groove proving magnetic as the nocturnal melody works its magic.

The tempo rises rapidly, with the pounding bass arpeggio of 'This Kitty Got Claws' purposefully marching through cascading synth textures, euphoric chords, and self-assured lead vocals. Expertly displaying his expansive production finesse, the rhythm once again switches as we sashay into the utterly bewitching 'Rhythm Cast A Spell On Me', with Lydia Waits' indelible vocal providing a profoundly atmospheric moment. A sublimely constructed bed of neatly woven keys, xylophone strikes and haunting bass clarinet elegantly embrace the ethereal lead vocal.

The mystical melodies of 'Not Supposed To Be' echo over a misty woodland landscape, with Lydia Waits' unfeigned vocal flowing over jagged synth textures and gently broken rhythms, before Helle Larsen returns with the sensual swansong 'Let's Stay Right Here'. Sumptuous keys shimmer over a steady tempo, with warm bass and sugary melodies supporting the intoxicating lead vocal for a gorgeously heartfelt finale.

Vividly illustrating Kohib's unthinkably vast sonic repertoire, 'Today's Tales Of Tomorrow' looks set to further enhance the Norwegian producer's already glowing reputation, with each exquisitely-formed track combining to create a collection that's at once powerfully memorable and profoundly coherent.
